What Is Actually Declining

Mitochondria are the organelles that produce energy inside every cell. As you age, they make that energy less efficiently. Membrane potential drops, reactive oxygen species climb, and ATP output falls, so cells spend more on upkeep and have less energy left for everything else. Mitochondrial decline is one of the most measurable parts of biological aging.

Why mitochondrial function declines with age

Two things happen at once. Existing mitochondria take on oxidative damage and lose output, and the body recycles the damaged ones more slowly than it should. Without enough turnover, worn-out mitochondria accumulate and pull down the energy capacity of the whole cell. Human muscle studies show mitochondrial energy output can fall by roughly half across the adult lifespan.

How to support mitochondrial health
